JMW - the artist's toolbag 12/13

We created this handsome toolbag for creative types to safely hold precious paint brushes and pencils when they head out for inspiration. It could just as easily be used for markers and pens, or anything else that needs a safe home.

JMW is crafted from an upcycled windmill sailcloth from De Palmboom windmill in Schiedam. The sail was no longer strong enough to keep whipping around in the Dutch weather, but perfect for being made into something useful and handsome by the clever clogs at Mill Made.

Produced in a very limited edition of only 13, each bag is unique as a result of the varying weather patterning on the canvas created during its earlier working life.

JMW was commissioned by the Dordrechts Museum Shop to celebrate the exhibition Water and Light. Highlights of the Yale Center for British Arton display until to 14 June 2026. Exhibition highlights include paintings and drawings by JMW Turner.

Constructed with 12 pockets for your tools, the tool tips are protected when the top edge folds down, and then the whole bag is then rolled up and tied with a nifty soft rope. Snug as bugs.

We named it after the English artist JMW Turner, who is renowned for packing up his paints and sketchbooks to execute his works en plein air outside. This practice enabled him to more directly respond to the changing moods of the sky and the sea.

The soft cloth has been hand made by the team at Wereldwijven Ateliers in Dordrecht, South Holland. Your purchase of Mill Made products also supports this important social initiative.

One of the Dordrechts Museum exhibition highlights is JMW Turner’s oil painting Dort or Dordrecht: The Dort Packet-Boat from Rotterdam Becalmed. In 1817, Turner visited Dordrecht and was deeply moved by the play of light on the water and the stillness of the harbour
As a place of participation, the primary goal of Wereldwijven Ateliers is to increase the well-being of participants. Currently around 80 women work there, emanating from over 27 countries. JMW - the artist’s toolbag was made by Sawsan Mohamed and her team in the atelier.

Wash at or below 40° C. Do not tumble dry. Do not dry clean. Do not iron. Do not bleach
